Las Vegas International Airport Transfers

The Las Vegas airport in Nevada, United States of America (U.S.A.) is officially called the McCarran International Airport with airport code LAS. It is the major commercial airport that serves the sin city, Las Vegas, and Clark County in Southern Nevada. It is located in Paradise, Clark County, Nevada, merely one mile away from the famous Las Vegas Strip where the big hotels and casinos are situated. Also, it is just five miles away from the central business district or downtown Las Vegas. The airport has an area of 2,800 acres with four runways. The Clark County Department of Aviation oversees the operations. It is owned by the Clark County and is named after Pat McCarran, a former Nevada senator.

McCarran International Airport has two terminals with 96 gates for air transportation. It provides shuttle service between terminals for free. There is provision for vehicle parking on short or long term basis, car rentals center, a bank, automated teller machines, various restaurants and snack bars, specialty shops/boutiques, passenger lounges and information counters/help desks. Other facilities found at the airport are a multitude of slot machines, a fitness center, play area for children and the Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum.

There are two modes of transportation in getting to Las Vegas airport: ground transportation and air transportation.

Ground Transportation to McCarran International Airport

To reach LAS, ground vehicles take either Tropicana Avenue (State Route 593) or the Las Vegas Beltway (Interstate 215). Transportation enters the airport by way of the McCarran Airport Connector, including Paradise Road or Swenson Street as well as the airport tunnel.

By Bus

There are various local bus companies that operate daily between LAS and all major hotels and motels in Las Vegas. Some of these companies are: Citizens Area Transit (CAT), Westcliffe Airport Express, Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada and Bell Transportation.

After checking out of the hotel/motel and heading back to the airport, it is advisable to call the bus company at least two hours in advance. As buses are plentiful though, flagging down a bus outside the hotel is never a problem.

If one is coming from a different city, there is Greyhound that runs buses from different cities like Salt Lake City in Utah, Kingman in Arizona and Los Angeles in California that proceed to Las Vegas.

Due to service cutbacks in 1997, Amtrak no longer provides direct train service to Las Vegas. As a form of service, Amtrak provides instead a daily bus route that travels from Needles, California to LAS.

By Taxicab

Taxis abound in Las Vegas and are available outside hotels, casinos and at taxi stands. However, a short ride from the Strip to LAS is expensive so ask the driver to take Tropicana or Paradise instead of the freeway. Taxis do not commonly accept payment by credit cards. A taxicab can accommodate a maximum of five passengers for the same price, so this would be a good deal for people travelling in groups. Some taxi companies that serve the Las Vegas area are:, ANLV/Ace/Union/Vegas-Western/Virgin Valley, Whittlesea/Henderson, Nellis Cab Company, Desert Cab Company, Checker/Yellow/Star, Lucky Cab Company, Western Cab Company and Deluxe Taxicab Service.

By Shuttles and Limousines

Usually, shuttle and limousine services are provided by one and the same company. Compared to limousine services, shuttles are more affordable. Although a limousine ride is charged by the hour, it is not as expensive as expected. It is recommended for round trip ticket holders to place reservations with the shuttle or limousine service for the timely return to the airport. Call the company a day before departure to determine the pick-up point at the hotel and time. Shuttle/limousine services are provided by companies such as AWG Ambassador/Ritz, Bell Trans, CLS, Executive Las Vegas and Showtime.

By Rental Car

The rent-a-car facility at McCarran International Airport brings together all the car rental companies under one roof. The rental agencies are Advantage, Alamo, National, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, EZ Rent-A-Car, Hertz, Payless and Thrifty. When renting a car; find out the drop-off point to turn it in upon departure. There are free shuttle services offered by rental agencies to bring customers to the airport so they can make their flight on time.

By Monorail

At present, getting to Las Vegas airport by monorail is not yet a transportation option. Formerly known as the MGM Grand-Bally’s Monorail, the Las Vegas Monorail is a mass transit system found on the Las Vegas Strip. It links Paradise and Winchester but does not go into the City of Las Vegas.

The planned expansion of the monorail service to the airport has been opposed by city operators of limousines and taxicabs because they fear that their shuttling business to and from the airport will be adversely affected. Contrary to this, the extension project of the monorail system to McCarran International Airport is well supported by various owners of hotels and casinos on the Las Vegas Strip. The proposed extension of the monorail system to LAS is projected to be built.

Air Transportation to McCarran International Airport

Flights to LAS come from different parts of the world. Top international airlines that serve LAS are: WestJet, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, Mexicana, Aeromexico, Philippine Airlines, Korean Airlines, Condor and Sunwing Airlines.

Short domestic flights from cities like Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco are the most popular routes. The airport is served by domestic airlines such as American, Delta, Southwest, Spirit, United, US Airways, Virgin America, Frontier, AirTran, Alaska, and JetBlue. As all major U.S. flag carriers fly into LAS, competition keeps fare prices low.

To get the most out of one’s trip to Las Vegas, research on good prices and great deals on fares is recommended by visiting Kayak.com, Expedia.com, smartertravel.com, airfarewatchdog.com and Deal Finder with American Airlines.

Almost half of all the visitors in Las Vegas arrive by air at the McCarran International Airport. As a result, LAS is considered as one of the world’s busiest airports. It is not advisable to fly out or leave Las Vegas on a Sunday and Thursday as these are the days when passenger volume is at its heaviest. Thus, get to the airport early.

McCarran International Airport has been serving as a link for Southern Nevada to the U.S. air transportation system and connects Las Vegas to the world.

Don't forget - if you plan to travel during your stay, it might be more economical to rent a car at Las Vegas Airport.
